For this activated vegetable charcoal, we work in partnership with a French manufacturer of vegetable charcoal, recognised as a company with high social and environmental value.
This charcoal is obtained from chestnut wood sourced from forests in the Dordogne region, which are sustainably managed by an enthusiast. The variety of chestnut tree used produces fast-growing trees that grow in clumps. When they reach 5 to 10 meters, these clumps are cut down to the ground, and the tree grows back very quickly afterwards. Trees are replanted to ensure the forest's sustainability.
These forests are certified organic and PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification, which defines rules for sustainable forest management). The charcoal is then produced in Burgundy by continuous pyrolysis in a closed-loop unit, without any chemicals. Tar and combustion fumes are recycled to fuel the boiler, and the only emission into the atmosphere is water vapour.
The production site is energy self-sufficient thanks to a cogeneration system: the boiler that produces the water vapour to power the production unit is self-powered by recycled combustion gases. The water vapour produced is used both to heat the production unit and to supply the site with energy.
High-quality, highly effective activated carbon for digestive well-being
The fixed carbon content of this charcoal is ≥ 95%, much higher than the European regulation requirement of a minimum of 80%. The specific surface area of this vegetable activated carbon is 846 m²/g, measured using the N.L.D.F.T. method (with N₂ + H₂), which is the most relevant analysis for evaluating the adsorption properties of a carbon rich in micropores, as it takes into account the distribution of pore sizes.
It combines the results of N2 and CO2 or H2 adsorption, whereas the most commonly used B.E.T. method only takes into account N2 adsorption, which diffuses poorly in micropores due to its molecular size. The B.E.T. specific surface area, often reported with very high values, is not sufficient to guarantee the effectiveness of activated carbon, as it does not provide any indication of pore size distribution. To sequester intestinal gases, micropores with a diameter close to that of the gases to be absorbed are required. Thanks to the specific properties of chestnut wood, the activated carbon obtained after carbonisation and steam activation has a particularly high proportion of ultra-micropores, around 0.4 nm, which is ideal for absorbing the intestinal gases involved in bloating and flatulence (methane, carbon dioxide, and dihydrogen).

Due to its high absorption capacity, activated charcoal can reduce the effectiveness of medications or contraceptive pills if taken at the same time. To avoid any interaction, it is recommended to take activated charcoal at least 2-3 hours before taking medication or contraceptive pills.
This may also apply to certain dietary supplements, particularly those containing vitamins and active substances that can be absorbed by charcoal. It is also advisable not to take your supplements during the same meal as charcoal.
For its effect on bloating and flatulence, activated vegetable charcoal should preferably be taken 20 minutes before a meal and immediately after. Ideally, it is recommended to take 4 capsules 20 minutes before a meal and 4 capsules after. However, it is also possible to take activated charcoal capsules when digestive discomfort is felt.
Vegetable activated charcoal capsules are best taken on an occasional basis, in cases of intestinal discomfort, bloating, flatulence, or diarrhea. It does not necessarily need to be taken as a course of treatment, but it is also possible to take it for a few days to a week, particularly for its detoxifying effects, or during periods of digestive imbalance.
It is not advisable to consume activated charcoal every day on a continuous basis. Vegetable activated charcoal should rather be used on an occasional basis, when you feel bloated or in case of digestive discomfort, or in courses of treatment lasting a few days to a week.
