What is argan oil?

Argan oil is a precious carrier oil extracted from the kernels of the argan tree (Argania spinosa), endemic to Morocco. Used for centuries by the local people, this oil is renowned for its many cosmetic and nourishing properties. It is obtained by cold pressing the kernels contained in the fruit of the argan tree, which preserves its natural properties.

Argan oil is a fatty substance derived from the kernels of the fruit of the argan tree. These kernels (between one and three per fruit) are called ‘arganons’. This product has been used for centuries by the Berber peoples. It is native to Morocco, particularly the Souss plain. .

What are the special properties of argan oil?

With over 75% unsaturated fatty acids, argan oil has a fantastic restorative and regenerating effect on the skin. High in vitamin E, sterols and phenolic compounds, it also has antioxidant properties to combat premature ageing and sagging skin. A luxurious oil known for its nourishing properties, it is suitable for all skin types, particularly dry skin.

Why use argan in cosmetics?

Argan oil is particularly popular for its moisturising and nourishing properties: it strengthens the skin barrier, preventing dehydration and leaving the skin soft and supple. Thanks to its high vitamin E and polyphenol content, it also has antioxidant properties that help protect the skin from external aggressors such as pollution and UV rays, helping to slow down skin ageing and the appearance of wrinkles.

This active ingredient is also popular for its soothing and repairing properties, making it ideal for skin that is sensitive, irritated or prone to redness.

Why should I use argan oil on my face?

Deeply nourishes and moisturises

Argan oil is extremely nourishing as it is very high in essential fatty acids such as omega-6 and omega-9. It helps restore the skin barrier, preventing dehydration and leaving skin soft and supple.

Fighting the signs of ageing

High in antioxidants, particularly vitamin E, argan oil combats the free radicals responsible for skin ageing. It stimulates collagen production, helping to improve skin elasticity and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Soothes and regenerates irritated skin

Argan oil has emollient properties that make it an excellent skin care product for irritated skin. It helps integrate the skin barrier and keeps skin nourished and comfortable.

What are the benefits of argan oil for the face?

  • Effective against facial wrinkles: out of argan oil's many qualities, its regenerating properties are undoubtedly the most interesting. What's more, its natural antioxidant content means it reduces the damage caused by free radicals. It therefore helps to prevent accelerated skin ageing. It is especially effective at smoothing fine lines and revitalising the appearance of mature or sagging skin. See also: natural anti-ageing active ingredients.

  • Effective on brown spots: argan oil's regenerating properties have also made it a popular choice for preventing age spots. Its ability to support cell renewal indirectly helps to reduce the appearance of age spots. It can therefore be used as the basis for an usefulspot lotion or a complexion-targeting evening serum.

  • For dry skin: thanks to its richness in fatty acids, argan oil is an incredibly nourishing natural resource. Applied to the skin, it helps to restore the integrity of a damaged hydrolipidic film (particularly in dry skin). Toning and softening, it is also recommended for improving dry skin's suppleness and elasticity.

For which skin types should argan oil be used?

Dry skin: because it is high in essential fatty acids, particularly omega-6 and omega-9, it penetrates easily into the deeper layers of the epidermis, providing intense, long-lasting hydration. These fatty acids act by forming a protective film on the skin, preventing water loss and providing additional lipids, preventing dehydration and keeping skin supple and nourished.

Mature skin lacking tone: argan oil is high in antioxidants, such as vitamin E, and essential fatty acids, such as omega-6. These components help to promote the production of collagen, which helps maintain the skin's elasticity and firmness. It promotes hydration thanks to the fatty acids that form a protective film that retains water in the tissues. This helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It also prevents loss of tone, restoring the skin's natural radiance, and giving it a smoother texture and more youthful appearance.

Devitalised skin: argan oil is perfect for devitalised skin in need of revitalisation and repair. Its regenerating properties and high vitamin E content give it anti-oxidant properties. It improves the appearance of tired, dull skin and combats the free radicals generated by stress, fatigue and external damage.

How to use it in face products

Argan oil can be incorporated into various types of skincare products and has specific benefits depending on how it is applied:

As a serum

Argan oil can also be used to replace your serum. Apply 1 to 2 drops of pure argan oil to clean skin before using your day or night cream. It acts as a moisturising and protective serum.

As a cream

Mixing a few drops of argan oil into your day cream or night cream provides more intense hydration and improves skin suppleness. This method is ideal for dry, sensitive skin that needs a rich but non-greasy treatment.

Apply 3 to 4 drops all over the face and neck for a complete nourishing treatment. Use on its own in the evening if you prefer a minimalist treatment, or as the last step in your routine to seal in moisture.

Should I apply argan oil to my face every night?

In natural cosmetics, regular application is the key to lasting results! The best thing to do is to apply argan oil to your face every evening. Feel free to adapt how often you apply it to suit your skin type. Dry skin, for example, needs a daily dose to soothe it. But oily skin does better with an application every other evening. Listening to your skin is the best advice we can give you.

Can I use food-grade argan oil on my face?

For optimum results on the skin of your face, we recommend using cosmetic-quality argan oil. The kernels used to make cooking oils are often roasted before being pressed. This technique brings out their characteristic nutty flavour, but destroys much of their cosmetic properties.
