The secret of a natural detergent lies in its quality ingredients, which protect both the effectiveness of the wash and the environment. You can use a base such as Marseille soap, Aleppo soap or black soap. Bicarbonate of soda, soda crystals, sodium percarbonate and many others are often added for their cleaning, bleaching and degreasing properties, guaranteeing impeccable cleaning while minimising the impact on nature. Natural fragrances such as Orange Blossom or Lily of the Valley can be added for a fresh scent. To make your own homemade linen water, use hydrosols such as lavender or spearmint.
Our tips for linen care with a natural detergent
Using a natural detergent to look after your linen is not only good for the planet, but also helps your clothes last longer.
Natural stain removal: for difficult organic stains (tea, coffee, wine, blood, perspiration, fruit, grass, etc.): dab the stain with a solution of sodium percarbonate or soak the clothes in a basin of warm or hot water with 1 to 2 tablespoons of sodium percarbonate. On delicate fabrics: treat greasy stains dry with clay.
Scent with homemade linen water: you can replace half the demineralised water in your iron with the hydrosol of your choice (Litsea cubeba, lavender, orange blossom, geranium, etc.) or use a starch spray (powdered corn starch and hot water) and spray on the linen before ironing to make ironing easier.
Make your own fabric softener: for machine washing, pour 1 to 2 spoonfuls of white vinegar into the "fabric softener" compartment of your machine. Add 10-30 drops of the essential oil or fragrance of your choice. For hand washing, do the same but in the rinse water.
Natural drying: air-dry whenever possible. This extends the life of your clothes, saves energy and prevents shrinkage or warping caused by tumble-drying.
