Kpangnan Butter is obtained by pressing the nuts (or seeds) of the Pentadesma butyracea tree. This tree is widespread in West Africa, where it grows mainly in forested areas. Often referred to as “Golden Shea” or the “Butter Tree”, it is sometimes compared to the shea tree but should not be confused with it. Shea comes from a different species that grows primarily in the savannah.
The Kpangnan tree produces edible fruits with a sweet pulp when ripe. The leaves and roots are also used in various medicinal preparations. The pulp is fermented to facilitate the extraction of the seeds, which are then dried and crushed to produce the butter.
With a texture and similar properties to Shea butter, Kpangnan butter is often used as a substitute in Africa, especially when tradition prohibits the use of Shea butter, such as for the treatment of leprosy or postpartum care among the Fulani women.
Exceptionally rich in stigmasterol, a phytosterol rarely found in nature, as well as spinasterol and tocopherols (vitamin E), this butter has regenerating and soothing properties, making it a highly valuable ingredient in treatments for dry or damaged skin.
This butter, with a rich texture but less sticky than Shea butter and a less pronounced scent, is an excellent alternative to Shea for varying the sources of your butters, thus helping to distribute your environmental footprint more evenly.
Kpangnan plays an important role in sustainable development as the tree grows in areas threatened by deforestation. Using its nuts helps protect these forests while providing income for local communities. Harvesting these nuts provides crucial income, especially for women, who traditionally collect wild fruits and use the income to support their family and household.
