This minimum extraction ratio, which is something we strictly follow at Aroma-Zone, guarantees an intense fragrance, better conservation and, above all, a high concentration of aromatic molecules in the hydrosol, a proof of its quality.

Native to the Mediterranean basin, myrtle has been a sacred shrub since Roman times. In Greek mythology, myrtle was entirely dedicated to Venus, the goddess of love, for its ability to bring about and sustain love. Since then, it has represented love, beauty and chastity, and is still found in garlands and bridal bouquets in some Mediterranean countries.

Widely-renowned in traditional medicine in the Mediterranean region, Myrtle has been used because of its many virtues since ancient times, notably by Hippocrates, Dioscorides and Pliny.

Myrtle is traditionally renowned in phytotherapy for its beneficial effects on the respiratory system, particularly in cases of bronchitis, sinusitis and coughs, but also for combating diarrhoea, haemorrhoids and bleeding.

Myrtle grows wild in Corsica and is one of the characteristic shrubs of the maquis. The aromatic leaves of Corsican myrtle produce an essential oil rich in 1,8-cineole, similar to what is known as 'green myrtle', and quite distinct from Moroccan red myrtle, with its myrtenyl acetate chemotype. As the essence of myrtle is found in the leaves, it is the young leafy branches that are harvested. In Corsica, it is harvested with a sickle, before or after flowering in June. Steam distillation of these leafy twigs produces both the essential oil and its hydrosol.

Astringent and tonic, this hydrosol is perfectly suited to formulating skincare products for combination and oily skin. Thanks to its natural 1,8-cineole content, it is also a great ally for the respiratory system and an ideal hydrosol for getting through the winter comfortably.
