Interview with Dr Agathe Aoun, a member of our Aroma-Zone Committee of Dermatologists

You studied in the West Indies and practise exclusively in private practice in Martinique. As a specialist in tropical dermatology, you are familiar with the issues encountered on the islands. What exactly are your areas of specialism?

I have in-depth knowledge of darker skin types, of course. I also specialise in paediatrics and aesthetic medicine.

What do you enjoy most about practising dermatology?

The variety! Whether it's the patient profiles or the conditions to be treated. In my practice, in the course of a single day, I might see infants, teenagers, adult men and women, or elderly patients. And their reasons for consulting can range from minor issues to cancers or toxic dermatitis. Clinical observation plays a central role in our profession when it comes to making a diagnosis. We carry out surgical and cosmetic procedures. Furthermore, dermatology isn’t limited to treating the skin: the treatment of the oral and genital mucous membranes, as well as the hair and nails, is also part of our profession. Finally, dermatology is a very holistic discipline: psychological support is often required. This day-to-day variety makes dermatology a fascinating speciality!

Which dermo-cosmetic active ingredient do you most frequently recommend to your patients?

I usually recommend retinol and its derivatives.
