The formation of Himalayan salt dates back more than 500 million years, when oceans covered most of the Earth. The slow evaporation of the waters of the Tethys Ocean, as climate changes and tectonic movements occurred, gradually led to the deposition of salt in the region, even before the formation of the Himalayan mountain range.
Between 70 and 50 million years ago, the collision of the Indo-Australian and Eurasian plates formed the Himalayan mountain range, and the Tethys Ocean completely disappeared, leaving behind significant salt deposits that were compressed and pushed beneath the Earth’s surface by tectonic movements. Today, the Indian plate continues to slide beneath the Eurasian plate at a rate of about 5 cm per year, causing the Himalayas to rise. This mountain range stretches over more than 2,400 km, from Nanga Parbat in northern Pakistan in the west to Namche Barwa in China in the east, and includes the highest peaks on Earth, such as Everest and K2.
It is in northern Pakistan at the foothills of the Himalayas, at a depth of approximately 300–600 m, that precious pink salt deposits are found, protected from any external pollution. These pink salt mines have been traditionally exploited for over 2,000 years, and this salt is mentioned in Ayurvedic texts, which describe its many virtues.
The Himalayan pink salt we offer is simply extracted from these mines and ground; it undergoes no processing and contains no additives. It is renowned for its richness in minerals and trace elements (including iron, potassium, magnesium, calcium, copper, manganese, phosphorus and zinc) and owes its beautiful pink color to iron oxides. Appreciated for its delicate taste and elegance, it is now used in cooking by top chefs. Known to help detoxify the body and improve acid–base balance, it is used both to season food and as a cosmetic ingredient in homemade bath and scrub products, thanks to its large crystals.
