Andiroba is a very tall tree, up to 40 m in height, belonging to the same family as neem. However, unlike neem, it grows naturally in the Amazon rather than India. Its fruit is a large capsule that opens when ripe, revealing 4 to 12 nuts resemble chestnuts. In the local Indian language, "andiroba" is derived from two words: "nhandi" meaning "oil" and "rob" meaning "bitter".
Once pressed, these seeds produce an oil characterised by its bitterness, originally used by the indigenous populations of Amazonia to treat skin blemishes and joint discomfort.
Extensively studied by scientists, this oil has revealed the presence of limonoids, the compounds responsible for the oil's bitterness but that are mainly known for their powerfully soothing properties. It is the ideal ingredient for massage oils targeting joint discomfort. Andiroba oil is also traditionally recommended for its beneficial effects on skin with atopic tendencies.
Premium product
Our 100% pure and natural Andiroba Oil is of exceptional quality. Virgin, certified organic, unrefined, and non-deodorised, it is carefully produced to preserve all the active compounds that make it so remarkably effective.
Sourced through a partnership supporting the sustainable and fair development of Amazonian oil production, this oil provides valuable economic opportunities for local communities, who harvest it from trees growing naturally in the region. It also helps protect these trees, which are often threatened by logging due to the high value of their wood.
Andiroba, Carapa guianensis, is a large tree that grows naturally throughout the Amazon basin, favouring wet, flood-prone areas along rivers. It flowers between August and October and produces fruit from January to April. When ripe, the fruit falls, and the seeds, which float on the rivers, are collected. Each fruit contains 4 to 12 seeds, and production varies between 5 and 200 kg of seeds per tree. The oil is extracted from the boiled seeds using a simple press called a “tipiti”. Around 18 litres of this premium oil are obtained from every 100 kg of seeds. The oil solidifies below 25°C, taking on the consistency of a smooth paste.
The indigenous Amazonian peoples have been using Andiroba Oil for centuries to protect and look after their skin. According to popular tradition, it was used to treat skin problems, eczema, insect bites and wounds, as well as to relieve painful muscles and various types of inflammation, and ward off biting insects. It is also traditionally used as a medium for extracting the dyes used in body paints from plants. The caboclos use Andiroba Oil, combined with leftover coconut flesh and wood ash, to make a soap reputed for treating skin diseases and repelling insects.
Today, the properties of Andiroba Oil are being studied by the CEME do Brasil (Central de Medicamentos) and numerous scientific publications have confirmed the anti-inflammatory, soothing and repellent effects of the bitter compounds contained in andiroba seeds, such as andirobine and gedunines.
