Widespread in the tropics, the sapote tree is a member of the Sapotaceae family. Its fruit, the sapote or "mamey sapote" as it is known in some regions, is a large oval fruit with brown skin and pink-orange flesh. It weighs up to 2 kg. Thanks to its sweet, pumpkin-like flavour and high nutritional value, it is often eaten raw. The flesh contains a single large, hard kernel from which sapote oil is extracted. This oil has a distinctive almond-like smell. Rich in fatty acids, sapote oil is traditionally used in Santo Domingo for hair growth and to make conditioning products.
