• Broad-spectrum preservative for cosmetic products containing water, effective at acidic pH (4.5-5.5)

Add the vitamin E to the cooled, finished formula and mix well to ensure even distribution. To protect fatty phases that are sensitive to rancidity and help extend their shelf life, you can add vitamin E to the bottle as soon as you receive it.

Influence on the pH of aqueous preparations: None

1. Add to the finished cold formula and mix well to homogenise.

2. Check the pH of the preparation using a pH paper strip and, if necessary, adjust with lactic acid or citric acid to achieve a pH of approximately 4.5 to 5.5.

Influence on the pH of aqueous preparations : Slightly increases the pH, which must therefore be adjusted with lactic acid or citric acid.

Note: In reality, it is the acidic forms of the two compounds (benzoic acid and sorbic acid) that are effective as preservatives, not the "benzoate" and "sorbate" salts. It is therefore important to ensure that the pH of the preparation is acidic so that the compounds are mainly in their effective acidic form. Some effectiveness can be observed up to a pH of around 6, but above this level, the preservative is unlikely to be effective. For optimal preservation, we recommend adjusting the pH of preparations to around 4.5-5.5. The preservative will be most effective at a pH of 4.5-5.0.

The preservative is offered in its basic form because salts are easier to store and use (more stable and soluble in water, which makes it possible to present it in a very practical solution).

Preservation

Store at room temperature away from moisture and light. Close the bottle tightly after use.

Precautions

• Some people are sensitive to sodium benzoate or potassium sorbate, so it is essential to perform an allergy test on the inside of your arm (test the finished product or the preservative diluted to 1%) and wait at least 24 hours (ideally 48 hours) to observe any possible reaction. Furthermore, if you notice any irritation after applying a cosmetic product, stop using it.
