The various causes behind your hair losing its shine

The causes of your hair losing its shine can vary depending on a number of factors. One of the most common reasons is the excessive use of harsh chemical hair products, such as sulphates and alcohols, or overly frequent colouring and bleaching. Unfortunately, these ingredients can strip your hair of its natural oils, leaving it dull, lifeless and dried out to varying degrees.

Failing to use a conditioner or not nourishing your hair sufficiently with natural products can lead to a loss of shine in your hair. Furthermore, excessive exposure to the sun, pollution or even heat-styling tools such as hairdryers, straighteners or curling irons can contribute to a loss of shine in your hair.

It is therefore crucial to protect your hair before using these appliances, but also to look after your hair on a daily basis with natural, nourishing products suited to your hair type. Let’s take a closer look at how to restore your hair’s natural shine and health.

Our top tips for restoring healthy, shiny hair

Here are a few tips to help you regain healthy, shiny hair:

1. A balanced diet: A diet rich in essential nutrients, such as vitamins, minerals, proteins and omega-3 fatty acids, is important for healthy hair. Include foods such as fruit and vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains and sources of healthy fatty acids, such as avocados, nuts and oily fish.

2. Adequate hydration: Make sure you drink enough water every day to maintain optimal hydration of your hair and scalp. Internal hydration is just as important as applying external moisturising products.

3. Avoid harsh chemicals: Haircare products containing sulphates, parabens and silicones can damage your hair and make it look dull. Instead, opt for natural, gentle products free from harsh chemicals.

4. Avoid heat styling tools: Excessive use of hairdryers, straighteners and curling tongs can damage your hair and make it brittle. Try to limit your use of these tools and always apply a heat protectant before using them. If possible, set them to the lowest temperature.

5. Scalp massages: Gently massaging the scalp stimulates blood circulation, which promotes healthy hair growth. Add a few drops of vegetable oil, such as coconut oil or jojoba oil, for additional benefits.

6. Avoid washing your hair too often: Washing your hair too frequently can strip the scalp of its natural oils, leaving it dry and dull. Try to limit washing to two or three times a week, and use dry shampoo to refresh the roots between washes if needed.

7. Use natural hair care products: Natural hair masks made from ingredients such as avocado, coconut oil, yoghurt or honey can deeply nourish and moisturise your hair, restoring its shine and vitality. Of course, choose the plant-based oils best suited to your hair type.

8. Trim split ends: Split ends can make hair look dull and brittle. Regular trimming of the ends helps to maintain the health of your hair and prevent further damage.
