What is castor oil?

Castor oil is a carrier oil extracted from the seeds of Ricinus communis, a shrub native to East Africa in the Euphorbiaceae family. It is particularly popular in cosmetics, as it is not very comedogenic and does not clog pores. As a result, it is easily absorbed by the tissues. The active ingredients it contains - oleic acid, linoleic acid and saturated fatty acids - are beneficial for skin and hair hydration. Whether your beard is rough, uneven or neglected, applying castor oil will revive and moisturise it, and may even help it grow faster.

The benefits of castor oil

  1. Moisturises and reduces itching: shaving disrupts the hydrolipidic film and dries out the epidermis. Castor oil moisturises the skin thanks to its fatty acids.

  2. Soften hair: it softens both hair and beard and makes them shiny. The result is a cleaner look.

  3. Stimulates hair growth: it is used to stimulate hair growth. It also has a reputation for encouraging hair growth thanks to the ricinoleic acid it contains. It moisturises and strengthens your beard.

  4. Sanitising: while beards are often synonymous with irritation or itching when they're not looked after, castor oil and the ricinoleic acid it contains act as antimicrobials and fungicides, reducing itching and the appearance of dandruff.

How many times a week should I use castor oil?

If you have a dry or itchy beard, apply this carrier oil in the morning and evening every day to help moisturise further.

The length of your beard can influence the frequency of application. Long beards will need extra moisture, so don't hesitate to use it more often. However, if you have skin that tends to be oily, only apply moisturiser once a day, or every other day, so as not to accentuate the oily effect.

How long should I leave castor oil on my beard?

For castor oil to work, you need to leave it on long enough for it to be absorbed. You can apply a small amount of castor oil to your beard and leave it on all day, allowing it to be absorbed by the hair and skin. Just as this carrier oil is used to make night masks, put a generous amount of castor oil on your beard at night and sleep with it on. This will enable it to penetrate deeply and nourish your beard. The next morning, wash off any excess carrier oil.

How do I apply castor oil to my beard?

  1. Clean your beard: before applying the oil, make sure your beard is clean. You can use a beard shampoo or mild cleanser to remove dirt, excess oil and other impurities.

  2. Dry gently: gently pat your beard dry with a towel. You don't want to rub vigorously, as this could irritate the skin.

  3. Prepare the castor oil: pour a few drops of castor oil into the palm of your hand. The amount will depend on the length of your beard, so start with a small amount and add more if necessary.

  4. Distribute the oil in your hands: rub your palms together to distribute the castor oil evenly.

  5. Apply to the beard: slowly massage the oil into the beard, making sure you cover all the hairs evenly, from root to tip. Don't forget to also work on the skin underneath the beard.

  6. Use a comb or brush: for even distribution, you can use a comb or beard brush to comb the beard after applying the oil.

  7. Leave it on: leave the castor oil on for a few hours, or even overnight, depending on your preference.

  8. Wash if necessary: if you don't leave the oil on overnight, you can wash it off with a beard shampoo as part of your regular washing routine.

Does castor oil make beards grow?

It is rich in ricinoleic acid, whose anti-inflammatory properties promote scalp health. That's why it's widely believed that castor oil helps hair grow by stimulating the hair bulb (the hair follicle). As for the beard, it will moisturise and prevent dryness, which is beneficial to its healthy development. However, beard hair depends largely on genetics. If you have little or no beard for hereditary reasons, it won't be able to change that and the growth of your hair. However, thanks to its strengthening properties, it can be useful if you have holes in your beard - areas where it doesn't grow.

Which oil is good for beards?

While castor oil is often used for beard products, it's not the only one. You can also opt for argan oil, whose vitamin E softens the hair, jojoba oil, which moisturises without leaving a greasy feel thanks to its nourishing properties, or sweet almond oil, which promotes healthy hair growth. Finally, in recent years, hemp oil has become a miracle product, popular for its composition of Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids, which strengthen hair and maintain healthy skin.
