Focus on carotenoids :
Carotenoids are natural pigments yellow-orange found in fruits and vegetables that have photoprotective properties in plants. Of the 600 known pigments, around 40 are found in our food, and around 15 have been identified in blood and tissue. The most widely studied at present are beta-carotene and lycopene, and xanthophyll pigments, such as zeaxanthin and lutein. Their antioxidant effect is often highlighted because they are capable of trapping certain free radicals. Carotenoids are also known for their ability to modulate the activity of certain enzymes, namely lipoxygenases, which are pro-inflammatory and immunomodulatory enzymes, hence their importance in protecting against these phenomena.
Beta-carotene is also a precursor of Vitamin A, which stimulates the production of melanin, the pigment responsible for skin colour (and not tanning, as is often believed).
Focus on faradiol esters:
CO2 extract of Calendula contains faradiol esters, including faradiol, 3-myristic faradiol and 3-palmitic faradiol. These esters, particularly faradiol, are known for their powerful anti-inflammatory and anti-edematous properties. The CO2 technique is used to optimise the extraction of these important compounds. These active ingredients are used in a wide variety of applications, including soothing creams, skincare products for skin prone to redness, and mouthwashes for mucosal discomfort.
