Properties

In health care, katrafay (or katafray) essential oil is recognised for the following properties:

  • Tonic and fortifying

  • Rich in sesquiterpenes, known for their anti-inflammatory effects

  • Analgesic, helps fight pain

Uses

In addition to being used as a course of treatment, it is traditionally used in the following cases:

  • Fatigue and convalescence

  • Rheumatism, arthritis and joint pain

  • Skin inflammations: acne, eczema

  • Pain, backache, headache and sore throat

In practice

Convalescence: Mix with your oil blend. Massage the mixture locally along the spine.

Joint relief: Mix into your oil blend. Massage the mixture locally into the joints concerned.

Helps relieve headaches: By air diffusion, in synergy with other essential oils.

Precautions

  • Do not use during pregnancy and breastfeeding, or on children.

  • For external use only.

  • Use for a short period and with caution on sensitive skin or in allergic individuals.

  • Keep out of reach of children.

  • Avoid contact with eyes.

  • Certain natural compounds in this essential oil may present an allergy risk for sensitive individuals when the oil is used in cosmetic formulations (according to the 7th Amendment to the European Cosmetics Directive (2003/15/EC)): limonene.

  • As a general rule, always carry out a patch test on the inside of the elbow at least 48 hours before use.

  • Dangerous. Follow safety precautions.

  • Flammable liquid and vapours. May cause skin allergy. May be fatal if swallowed and enters the airways (if accidentally swallowed, do not induce vomiting). Toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects (in case of large-scale spillage into watercourses).

Katrafay, or Cedrelopsis grevei, is a plant endemic to Madagascar that belongs to the Lauraceae family. This plant grows mainly in the southern and south-western part of the island, a region of dry forests.

Katrafay is common in Malagasy medicine where it is seen as an important medication, but is also used in face masks by the women of the island.

1 full teaspoon = between 3 and 4.5 ml

1 full tablespoon = between 7.5 and 10 ml


However, these spoon ratios depend on a number of factors (e.g. viscosity of the liquid, temperature, depth and size of the spoon, rheological behaviour of the liquid), and we strongly advise you to use precise measuring equipment, such as graduated test tubes, graduated pipettes, and precision scales.

  • Peppermint essential oil: 0.5 ml

  • Blue tansy essential oil: 0.5 ml

  • Katafray essential oil: 0.5 ml

  • Helichrysum essential oil: 1 ml

  • Evening primrose oil: 5 ml

  • Argan oil: 5 ml

  • Calendula oil: 5 ml

  • Eucerin pH5 (or shea butter): add up to 100 g as required for product optimisation

Use: 2 to 3 topical applications a day until noticeable improvement.
