Anatural hybrid of a grapefruit tree and an orange tree, the pomelo is a citrus fruit native to the Caribbean. Corsica has a long history of growing citrus fruit thanks to its mild, sunny climate, and the pomelo was successfully planted there in the 1990s. Larger than an orange, the Corsican grapefruit or pomelo has a yellow to pink rind and juicy pink to red pulp. In 2014, the Corsican grapefruit was awarded a PGI (Protected Geographical Indication) recognising theexcellence of the know-how involved in the crop and the quality of the citrus fruit, which has atangy aroma and is untreated after harvesting.
