This tree is native to south-east China, near the border with Vietnam. It is unusual in that, once mature, it develops lengthwise fissures along its bark, which is the origin of its fragrance. For thousands of years, the Vietnamese have used its properties to revive convalescent patients.

Unfortunately, this tree has been classified as endangered due to how intensively it has been harvested. Today, it is protected by very strict conservation measures in certain East Asian nature reserves.
