A few ideas

As an ingredient in your blends:

  • Create a biscuity fragrance by combining bitter almond essential oil with your favourite fruit scents (Apple, Lemon, apricot, etc.)

  • Take inspiration from Dior's Hypnotic Poison and create a bewitching, addictive blend by combining bitter almond with Caraway, all set against an opulent, precious heart note built around Jasmine Sambac. A bewitching, sensual base note of Vanilla wraps everything up in a divine marriage.

In practice

  • Solubility:

    • Bitter almond essential oil is perfectly soluble in 90% alcohol and fats (carrier oils and butters).

    • However, it is insoluble in water.

  • Handling:

    • This essential oil is liquid and runs off easily through the dropper.

    • Wash your equipment with alcohol.

  • To make your own perfumes:

    • Add the drops of Bitter almond essential oil directly to your perfume preparation.

Precautions

  • Do not use when pregnant or breastfeeding, or on children under the age of 3.

  • Keep out of reach of children.

  • Due to its sensitising potential, the International Fragrance Association (IFRA) has issued recommendations on the quantity of bitter almond essential oil in perfumes and eaux de toilette: 0.27%.

    • Lip cosmetics (lipsticks, lip balms, etc.): 0.02%.

    • Deodorants: 0.02

    • After-shave lotions and creams: 0.09

    • Facial lotions and creams: 0.14

    • Body lotions and creams: 0.27

    • Hand creams: 0.14

    • Mouthwash solutions: 0.43

    • Intimate wipes: 0.05

    • Haircare products: 2.5

  • Bitter almond can cause allergies in sensitive individuals. s a general rule, always carry out a test application of your mixture in the crease of the elbow at least 48 hours before using it.

  • A natural compound contained in this essential oil may present a risk of allergy for some sensitive individuals when the essential oil is incorporated into a cosmetic composition (in accordance with the 7th Amendment to the European Cosmetics Directive (2003/15/EC)): benzyl alcohol.

  • This essential oil is pure and therefore very powerful. In cooking, always dilute as recommended, 1 to 2 drops in 500 g to 1 kg of preparation, dispersed in an alcoholic or syrupy fat.

Obtained by steam distillation of bitter almonds from bitter plums or apricots, bitter almond essential oil has been reworked to remove all traces of hydrocyanic acid (a toxic compound).

However, these spoon ratios depend on a number of factors (e.g. viscosity of the liquid, temperature, depth and size of the spoon, rheological behaviour of the liquid), and we strongly advise you to use precise measuring equipment, such as graduated test tubes, graduated pipettes, and precision scales.

Creamy lotion with bitter almond (S. Macheteau)

BeautyBody care

  • 80 ml white lily macerate

  • 50 ml verbena hydrosol

  • 16 ml plant-based lanolin substitute

  • 6 g mimosa wax

  • 3 g soya lecithin

  • 30 drops organic bitter almond essential oil or extract

  • 20 drops grapefruit seed extract

  • 7 drops of natural vitamin E

Directions: Melt the wax in the macerate in a bain-marie while stirring. When the wax has melted, remove from the heat and add the hydrosol in small quantities, while emulsifying. Add the lecithin and continue to emulsify. Add the rest of the ingredients while continuing to stir.
