Why take melatonin?

  • To get to sleep more quickly when your biological clock is out of kilter.

  • To reduce the time it takes to fall asleep when sleep is disturbed. Taking melatonin before going to bed is a way of sending the body a message that it's time to go to sleep.

  • To combat jet lag. Taking melatonin enables the melatonin naturally secreted by the body to return to its normal rhythm, resetting the body clock.

  • It is not addictive or habit-forming, and you won't wake up feeling groggy the next day.

Use

*To reduce the time it takes to fall asleep: Take 2 capsules with a glass of water just before going to bed. This means you are taking an effective dose of 1 mg of melatonin before bedtime.

**To reduce the effects of jet lag: Take 1 capsule with a glass of water just before going to bed. This means an effective dose of at least 0.5 mg. Start on the first day of travel and for a few days after arriving at your destination.

1 pot = 1 to 2 months.

What is melatonin?

Melatonin is a hormone that is naturally present in our bodies. It is secreted in the brain, by the epiphysis, from an amino acid, tryptophan. This is then converted into serotonin, then N-acetyl serotonin and finally melatonin. It is known as the sleep hormone because it plays an important role in our sleep cycles.

What role does it play in sleep?

Melatonin is responsible for the internal clock, known as the circadian rhythm, which regulates the sleep/waking rhythm. Melatonin is unique in that it is only synthesised in the dark, as the conversion of serotonin into N-acetyl serotonin cannot take place in the presence of light.

How does melatonin work?

The secretion of melatonin, which is inhibited during the day, increases shortly after nightfall. This is the natural signal that it's almost time to go to bed and triggers the process of falling asleep. It peaks between 2 and 4 in the morning and then decreases during the second half of the night. This decrease is the signal that it's time to wake up.

Why can our natural melatonin secretion be disrupted?

Although melatonin is produced naturally by our bodies, its secretion can get disrupted so that it stops working as intended. More often than not, this is due to inappropriate exposure to light at a time when we should be in the semi-darkness. This is particularly the case with the blue light from the screens we use in the evening, a "light pollution" that delays the onset of slumber and therefore the moment when we actually go to sleep. Or, conversely, exposure to light that isn't intense enough during the day can disrupt the rhythm of its secretion.

Which foods contain the most melatonin?

Certain foods and plants are naturally rich in melatonin, the sleep hormone. These include cherries, walnuts, maize, oats and tomatoes.

Which plants are effective for sleep?

Plants such as St John's wort, chamomile, lavender, verbena, hawthorn and valerian are known to help you relax and improve the quality of your sleep, thanks to their relaxing effects. They can be taken as herbal teas and infusions before going to bed, or as dietary supplements.

Frequently asked questions

Why do you sell 2 different doses of the melatonin food supplement?

Because there are 2 different reasons for taking melatonin and dosages need to be adjusted according to why you are taking it.

Jet lag can be countered by taking just 1 capsule a day, whereas if you have difficulty falling asleep, you should take 2 capsules a day.

How long does a course of plant-based melatonin food supplements last?

Melatonin as a food supplement is reserved for occasional use. If your sleep is persistently disturbed, it is advisable to discuss the matter with your doctor.

When should I take the food supplement melatonin?

If you find it difficult to fall asleep on a regular basis, it is advisable to take 2 capsules between 30 minutes and 1 hour before going to bed. If you are affected by jet lag after travelling abroad, it is advisable to take melatonin from the first day you arrive at your destination. Take 1 capsule between 30 minutes and 1 hour before going to bed.

Depending on the degree of jet lag, you can continue to take 1 capsule before going to bed for a few days after your arrival.

Can you take the food supplement melatonin during pregnancy?

No, melatonin is not recommended during pregnancy or when breastfeeding.

Can children take this plant-based melatonin food supplement?

No, this food supplement is for adults only.

Why take melatonin when our bodies produce it naturally?

The rhythm of melatonin production can be disrupted for a variety of reasons, such as changes in sunlight duration with the seasons, a natural reduction of its production with age, intensive use of screens, etc.

Supplementing it will influence its natural secretion and have a beneficial effect on the circadian cycle. This will make it easier to sleep.

It's important for our bodies to create the right conditions for restful sleep, to keep them in top form.

Natural or synthetic melatonin: what are the differences?

Natural melatonin, also known as phytomelatonin, comes from a botanical source. Melatonin is extracted from plants or algae such as St John's wort, rice, alfalfa or chlorella. Synthetic melatonin, on the other hand, is produced in the laboratory using chemical processes that reproduce the natural molecule and allow for more precision dosing.

Although both forms are effective in regulating sleep, natural melatonin is more popular with people looking for plant-based solutions. It is, however, more expensive.
