The Mandarin tree is a small member of the Rutaceae family, the citrus family. It has glossy, evergreen leaves and thorns on its branches. Its small white flowers produce the mandarin fruit. Originating in the Far East, particularly China, Vietnam and Japan, its name is said to come from the mandarins, the high officials of the Middle Kingdom. This winter fruit is rich in vitamin C and boosts the immune system, so it's ideal during periods of extreme cold.
