The Mandarin tree is a small tree from the Rutaceae family, which includes citrus fruits. It has deep green, shiny, and evergreen leaves, and its branches have thorns. Its small white flowers produce a fruit, the mandarin. Originally from East Asia, specifically China, Vietnam, and Japan, its name is thought to come from the mandarins, high-ranking officials of the Middle Kingdom. This winter fruit, rich in vitamin C, strengthens the immune system, making it ideal during cold periods.

At the start of autumn, the mandarin is initially green, with the pericarp being rich in chlorophyll. As autumn progresses and winter approaches, the temperature difference between day and night increases, and the chlorophyll gradually disappears.

This phenomenon causes the mandarins to turn orange as they pass through a yellow stage. These three colours are not due to different varieties, as all mandarins come from Citrus reticulata Blanco. To obtain the essence or essential oil, the pericarp, also called the fruit peel, undergoes a specific extraction process called cold expression. Due to its composition, Red Mandarin essential oil is renowned for its calming and soothing properties, making it a valuable ally for sleep disturbances. It is also traditionally known to aid skin problems due to its purifying effects.
