For a long time, many legends have associated myrtle with love and skincare in the Mediterranean basin. In Greek and Roman mythology, it was associated with the goddess of love, Aphrodite or Venus, and newly-weds wore myrtle wreaths on their wedding day, a practice that can still be found in some Mediterranean regions.

Myrtle was also used for medical and spiritual purposes. In Greek folk medicine, a syrup made from myrtle is used to treat coughs.

Green myrtle, like red myrtle, is traditionally recognised for its bronchial clearing properties, although it is preferred to red myrtle for its energising properties.
